Dar Choumissa, Marrakech, Marruecos

I found Dar Choumissa randomly on the internet - and I'm extremely glad I did! I live on the SW coast of Morocco and travel to Marrakech at least three times a year so have tried out many riads in the city. This is one of the best - for the not very pricey fee. It's situated just behind the Tazi Hotel - so really near to the square (Jamaa El Fna) and doesn't require hours of hopelessly stumbling around Marrakech's maze of back streets. Amazingly - given it's proximity to the central hubbub it's also extremely quiet. And that goes for the riad staff as well. Usually where most 'quiet' riads fall down is with the staff preparing breakfast, moving furniture, washing floors, watching blaring TV etc at god-knows o'clock in the morning. This is the first place I've stayed in Morocco - ever - where the staff actually whisper!

I stayed in a twin room with a friend but I had a nose at some other rooms - for future reference. They're very comfortable, all equipped with en-suite tadlakt bathrooms (with stacks of hot water), soap, towels etc and are decorated in typical but not tacky Moroccan style - with a dash of French 'je ne sais quoi'. Which goes for the entire riad which kind of reminds one of an old country house. The proprietor has wisely kept and restored all the original woodwork - and some of the decorative artwork on it is stunning. There are nice touches - like a fan in the room that actually works, insect repellent plugs - with the little block of insect repellent, oh, yes and wi-fi.

The roof terrace is lovely - very simple but calming and quiet with recliners. There's also a Berber tent pitched up there where one eats breakfast. Breakfast comprises hacha (a bit like corn bread), or Moroccan crepes (like French but thicker) homemade bread, yogurt, bananas, fresh orange juice, coffee or mint tea - and fantastic homemade confitures. The apricot one is to die for - none of your usual mass-produced slop here. I persuaded Tariq - the concierge - to flog me a massive jar of date and orange confiture to bring back home with me.

Tariq has a basic grasp of English - but that's not a problem for those who don't speak French. A bit of pointing and acting always works. He's very polite and not at all invasive - and can sort out trips and questions about where to find shops, museums etc, etc.

In short then - if you're looking for a place to relax and crash after a long flight or a day of running the gauntlet of Jamaa El Fna then I'd definitely check this place out. For around 28 quid for a double or 38 for a twin - you can't really go wrong.

I shall definitely be staying there on my next trip.
