Swayed by it's mostly positive reviews, I booked an 9 night stay at the Chelsea Centre East. I ended up leaving on my 3rd.
First, the dorm advertised as containing 6-12 people actually contained 14. Another "private room" in the back was actually just a hastily curtained off section containing even more beds (as can be seen in the photos below). On my second night, I had found my bed pushed aside and my things knocked over in order for them to fit another bed.

The Chelsea Center East is located right in the middle of the hip and trendy Lower Eastside in downtown Manhattan. We are within walking distance to Chinatown, Little Italy, Soho and the East Village.
We offer personal attention and friendly service and because we are small, we know everybody by name! We are also a great place for single travellers, because we provide a safe environment and it is easy to meet other travellers. Especially women who travel alone enjoy staying with us.
New York offers an exciting nightlife, especially in our area, and we think everybody should enjoy it (no curfew!) but once you get back to the hostel we require you to be quiet and considerate. We are not a party hostel but that doesn't mean we are not a fun place to stay at!
FOR CHECK-IN PASSPORT IS REQUIRED-NO EXCEPTIONS!

The hostel's biggest problem is its CLEANLINESS. Along the crevices of the walls you immediately see tiny insects crawl. Then the best part: Following my second night at the hostel, I found BITES over my feet, arms and legs. I originally thought they were from the parks in NY and not the hostel, but either way I had enough of my stay at the Chelsea East and made reservtations to move out the next day. Due to the short notice, I had to stay another night at the Chelsea East and my suspicions were confirmed when I awoke the next day with even more red bumps along my arms, feet, legs, hands and even my ears (photos below).
The manager of the hostel, a young gentleman named Reese, was not at all sympathetic when I informed him about my problem and would only offer one night's refund ($35).
Picking a hostel to stay in in NYC may be tough, but the choice where NOT to stay isn't. Photos:

Worst hostel ever!!!!!
They say they clean every day?! But where? Floor is really really dirty and you can't touch anything from the kitchen. All brown and sticky. Really disgusting.
The wallpaper is comming off the wall and there is mold everywhere.
Stuff is slagging guests off.
Had been to many hostels before but never experienced anything like this. We planed to stay in there for a week but left after two days. Other guests in there were really disgused too. I wonder if the stuff writes the positve critics about the hostel themselves.
I would recommand to join the hostel: Jazz on the City. Stuff is nice, hostel is uptown Manhatten, rooms are clean and it is only aroun 21,- dollar/night
