We arrived on New Years Eve and the lights and water were not working in our room, so we could not shower, brush teeth or use the toilet! No apology from hostel staff at all.
We also booked a room with air conditioning, but our room did not have a/c. We asked for a reduction in room rate because of this, and we were told we should speak to manager - we asked for manager to find us when he was next in, and during our 4 day stay, he did not attempt to find us once, so on last day when checking-out we brought up the issue about a reduction in room rate again, and were told this would not be possible! They had no intention in agreeing to this and were just stalling us by saying we should discuss with the manager!
We also told them on day 1 that we were only staying 3 nights instead of 4 and they said this was fine, but on check-out they told us we had to pay for all 4 nights as this is the booking we made! So when they said it was fine to leave after 3 nights, it was a complete lie also!
We told them we would not pay for 4th night, so they called the police!!! We did not speak any portugese, and after putting the phone down to the police, they told us that the police were on their way. However, I was pulled aside by another guest in the hostel (who was also lied to about being able to cancel her booking) who said that she was listening to the phone call and the police actually said they could not get involved, and were not coming to the hostel, so they completely lied to us to try to intimidate us ino paying the full rate!!!!
We eventually 'agreed' to pay for 3 nights. However, the hostel said that traveller's point had not forwarded the deposit I paid on-line to them, so we had to pay this again too. Travellerspoint have not responded to my emails to find out where my deposit actually is, so I have no idea whether the hostel was telling the truth here or not, although based on their other lies, it is unlikely!
I would not recommend this dirty hostel to anyone, and the town of arraial do Cabo itself is also really bad - beaches are good, but you get great beaches with good hostels in Cabo Frio or Buzios, so I would recommend you do a day-trip to Arraial do Cabo only and stay in either of these other towns in the evenings.
The hostel pool is virtually a cess pit too - do not use it, you will get very ill from the water!
Overall this was the worst hostel I stayed in during my travels, I could nto wait to get out of there!!
