The hostel is simple and a tiny little bit weared but the staff and the location even that out. Infact it is worth more. When we arrived we got a free drink, a discount and were lead to an ATM. Our room was spacious for Tokyo and the location near Ueno is easy to find and excellent for trips to Nikko, Kansai region and all of Tokyo of course. Also nearby are lots of shops and bars/restaurants, aswell a few corner stores for a cheap snack or drink. We would stay there anytime again.

The hotel and its proprietors are utterly charming. Communication issues were more than made up for by the staff's friendliness and willingness to help before, during and after my stay. I went armed with ten words of Japanese and a phrasebook and encountered no problems at all. This was just my first experience of the superb level of service given willingly and with grace that was typical of my stay in Tokyo.

The building and its facilities do show their age so may not be suitable for those expecting slick, generic accomodation of the Travelodge variety. For those who want a basic but authentically Japanese experience at a bargain price it might be perfect. Smoking is allowed throughout which may be a problem. As an ex-smoker of five years standing I didn't find it an issue. Free wifi was a boon and I found no problem getting access. On the one occasion I couldn't get a connection the proximity of a wonderful manga/internet cafe solved that problem in minutes.

The location is ideal - five minutes from Ueno Park during Hanami (bliss!). Very convenient for transport links to Narita and around the city. Some great budget eateries in the locality as well a some familiar multinational names which may help first time visitors (like me) find their 'gaijin legs'. Convenience stores by the handful are a couple of minutes walk or less. Also, for the Otaku among you Akihabara is within 20 minutes walking distance!

Thank you to all the staff for helping make my first visit to Tokyo a wonderful experience.

More of a backpackers haunt than a hotel. Cheap for Tokyo but remember it tis old and you can't swing a cat in the rooms. The traditional shared bathrooms are in the basement. Staff very friendly but can't speak a word of English.

Perfect location near the subway, 2 stations away from Tokyo, but this place would need some refreshment... Non-english speaking staff but very kind like most japanese. Clean place but quite old, and smelling fried food because of the fast-food on ground floor... Correct considering the price, if you don't stay too long.

I really enjoyed my stay here. Location was excellent as it was only a 1 minute walk from Ueno Station. The owners were nice and I intend on staying here the next time I visit Tokyo. This ryokan is a great value. Very cheap and great location!
