I had a single private room (shared bathroom) and at 55 pounds per night incl. breakfast in the heart of London, I really wasn't expecting much. It's no 4 or 5 star property, but I was very impressed given some of the other reviews I'd read! One of the earlier reviewers had mentioned the rooms being small so I was a little surprised to find my room quite spacious. It included a desk, sink, hanging space and a chest of drawers. And a bed of course My room was on the 5th floor and there's quite a few steps, so if that's a problem for you, this is not your kind of place. Everything was clean, though it's an old building, so the stairway especially is a bit worn. There were two showers for our floor (about 7 rooms I'd estimate) so plenty to go around. One was quite large and had a bath in it as well. It's the middle of London and The Strand is a busy street, so you do hear some traffic, which I don't mind, but others might. I didn't have breakfast at the hotel so can't comment on that. There's a bunch of nice little cafés and restaurants around the hotel. The folks at the reception were very nice and even lent me an adapter that I had forgotten as usual...

All in all, for this price and in this location, I don't think you can get anything better. Definitely would stay here again.

The bedroom was large and clean. What made this hotel a real problem was not the staff or the bed, they were really great, very helpful and willing.

The biggest problem was the noise. The windows in the rooms are double glazed so the noise from the street is not the problem. However, the doors to the rooms are not in anyway sound proof. Drunken guests would come in every night and yell at each other in the corridor, fumble with their keys in the lock, or slam the door behind them. One night a bachelorette (hen's) party came back and cried (oh yes... they were that drunk) and yelled at each other in the corridor at 4am. This problem we dealt with in a reasonable fashion by wearing ear plugs to bed... although it was uncomfortable it solved the problem.

The hot water issue was one we could not overcome so easily. The bedroom doors say "the hot water is always on". From this sign, we assumed they had had this complaint before. And yes, it may always be on but if so, then there is not enough of it. The tank is too small for such a large hotel. So, make sure that you shower in the evenings or earlier in the morning otherwise you'll be cold. (Fortunately we were there in summer).

Otherwise it really was a pretty good place. Only other thing that might irritate people is that the internet is only available in the common room downstairs, not in your bedroom... so you might wanna clean up those racoon eyes and bed hair before you go downstairs to email your folks.

Excellent location but the hotel is not very good.
We were 2 in a three bed dormitory and it was already too small.
Shower not clean. Breakfast was quite ok.
The price per night do correspond to the hotel quality.
