Chungking Mansions is scary - or maybe that's because we arrived there at 3am. We later found out it's quite safe, though, and the groups of people downstairs were relatively harmless.
The owner, nicknamed "Kyoto Mama", was very nice and greeted us upon our arrival at 3am in the morning. The room was small, but it was clean and well-kept. There was free wifi in our room, though the signal was kinda weak. The bathroom was, well, cramped, and the heater was a bit hard to use. All-in-all, the room was decent if you're just going to sleep in it.
The helper, Liza (a Filipina!), was always around when you needed her and constantly changed used towels. Also, she told us where to buy inexpensive food and stuff, and cautioned us not to buy at 7-11 since the items there are expensive.
There's an MTR station right beside Chungking Mansions, which means you can easily access all of Hong Kong. If you're going to be travelling a lot, remember to buy an Octopus Card in the MTR station.

I have stayed with mama kyoto in July 2010.
I was a bit skeptical about chungking mansion from other reviews and expected it much worse than it has been.
Yes, you will be asked to come and see/buy watches, handbags, souvenirs, etc... But if you just say no(!) and make clear you are not interested, they will not follow you and let you go with no problem.
I booked Kyoto guesthouse in advance and found it very helpful, because there are so many guesthouses in chungking mansion, you will take your time to see them all, and there are also some people in front of the elevators, who are trying to get you checked in in their guesthouse.
So it was really handy, -especially with my amount of luggage, to know where to go.Kyoto guesthouse itself was probably the best choice to make in chungking mansion. It was really, really clean! The guesthouse interior was modern and mama kyoto was such a nice housekeeper. When I arrived my room was not yet ready (because I arrived early), but she gave me another clean room, so that I could have a great shower and she cleaned the room another time after me! She was always pleased to help and tryed to make my stay as pleasant as possible!
The general location was quite good, as it was near to the harbour and on the big nathan road is everything you need. I can also recommend the cafe de choral direct near the chungking mansion entrance for good and cheap food.

Great hostel!!! Very clean!!! and a really good value for your money!!
The owner is really sweet and wants to help you with everything.
The location is perfect, it's in the middel of shoppingparadise and there are a lot of restaurants from wich you can choose. The hostel is about 10 til 15 minutes walk from the ferry. The hostel has really small rooms, but I think that's normal for Hong Kong and who needs so much space when you're only there for sleeping. WIFI in room is very fast!! I would definitely stay here again!!!

good value for money in hk. room is small but very clean. mrs. kam, the owner, is very pleasant and accommodating. location is very central so getting around town is super easy.
kyoto guesthouse is located on the 15th floor. the entire floor recently under went a renovation so the hallways are bright and clean. however, the building's exterior is very dated. most of the hostels are also located in this building. the ground floor is bustling with money exchange services, small restaurants (mainly indian) and shops. there is a laundry service (purity laundry) on the ground floor all the way in the rear which does a good job.

The Kyoto Guest House is a delightful place to stay. The location is great: within walking distance of the star ferry, avenue of stars, and the subway station. The rooms are nice and very clean. There is also free wi-fi, which is hard to find in Hong Kong. The lady who runs the place is an absolute doll. Speaks good english and Mandarin Chinese. She also has good advice as to how to get around and such. I really enjoyed my stay there and would definately go back.
