The Chianti Classico Tuscan wine producing region is located in the picturesque hill country between Florence and Siena, two of the most important Renaissance cities in Tuscany. Situated in the confines of this most important area is S. Polo in Chianti, a quaint village famous for its wine, olive oil and last but not least for its indigenous irises - the symbol of Florence - which, during the month of May, fill our valley with their deep purple.
San Polo in Chianti lies in the extreme north-eastern corner of Chianti, situated in a small valley called Rubbiana. The actual name Rubbiana may have been derived from the term 'robbia', a herb found in our valley and characterised by red roots which were used for dying wool and for tanning leather, two trades which have fueled the economy in this area for centuries.
The earliest documentation citing our area dates back to the XI century and refers to the ceremonial San Minato parish and the more popular San Paolo a Ema parish. San Minato, one of most important monuments to visit in the area, bears an antique inscription dated 1077, while San Paolo a Ema contains many precious works of art. It is interesting to note that San Polo in Chianti takes its name from the latter.
Our wine, Chianti Classico-Gallo Nero, as well as our olive oil production, are important points of interest. One of the great joys of visiting our valley is being able to observe production and then taste and purchase many of these items to take home.
