nigelpeaco Scott the owner is great and more than helpful. When you arrive at the airport, call the free 0800 number and he will pick you up within 15 minutes. Clean rooms with beds made up. An ideal spot for that overnight close to Auckland airport.
henryjohnm The kitchen was quite clean with ample room for food storage. The bunk beds were not so good since they rock easily; especially if you have a person who kicks in their sleep beneath you! The washing machine only used cold water?! A little inconvenient if you do not buy cold water washing powder. The Italians were not happy! and neither was I for that matter. Also, there is a little problem with seating in the TV room since I had to stand on occasion and lean against the sofa. This hostel is ok for a few days whilst you get something better fixed. All in all, it's a non-returner.

Nik. The first time in New Zealand, first time in Auckland, first time at Bamber House - you will never find a better start! Enough space and friendly people around there. Time to relax! Enjoy!!!
hrkhrk What a wonderful, accommodating hostel! Everyone is so friendly and great! Lovely atmosphere and common area. Good sized rooms. Close to the city and Mt. Eden -- the perfect location. Would stay here time and time again!!
Sander A flagship YHA, with top-notch facilities (especially noteworthy: the awesome industrial strength kitchen). Lacks some atmosphere, though definitely not because of lack of trying by the people at reception. Very useful travel desk, and generally a great place to stay. (Although I last stayed here in Feb 2005, I visited it again to use their travel desk in Jun 2008, and it seemed otherwise to be still as good.)
Sander 2013 Review: Wow, this place has gone down the drains. :( They've remodeled the reception area (now it feels no longer connected to the hostel; staff seems to have lost all feeling with what's happening) and kitchen (larger, but way dirtier). There's never enough tea towels around, thus never any dry dishes. In general, the entire kitchen is dismal nowadays. Tables in the dining/lounge area also tend to be left dirty. Mattresses were also super soft and bad. Knocking off 1-2 stars for all aspects other than "Location". Such a shame. :/ Old Review from 2003/2008: A smaller hostel than the International YHA just down the hill, City YHA lacks the super-complete facilities, but still has all the necessities, and quite a bit more atmosphere. People at reception are always super friendly. The location at the top of the hill means a bit of a climb each time you return here, but otherwise is still quite near everywhere you want to be. The location is great in that the bus to the airport stops right in front of the door.
