Sander Great location right across the road from a large supermarket, and otherwise right near the center of Wellington. Not quite as convenient for transport onward (the ferry terminal and bus station are all quite a bit further north), but great for when you're intending to stay in the city for a couple of days. In overall quality this place is quite similar to other flagship YHAs like the ones in Auckland or Sydney. The lounge and dining areas are very well done, and otherwise all its facilities are just plain good. As with all large YHAs, it lacks some of the atmosphere which you get in smaller places, though.
Cool Paul Sweet as! I stayed here for about 2 and a half months doing the work for accommodation. The bar in the basement is awesome, free pool almost all the time, wednesdays are $4 nights...crazy. most of the staff is pretty cool. there are a couple weirdos as long termers but over most of the people that seem to pass through are pretty cool. lots of south americans here...good people. good times. I think it's expensive though. but the location is crazy good. it's right around the corner from the establishment, maya, minibar, lots, vespa, all the great bars in town. that being said wellington is tiny so all of the hostels are no more than a 5 minute walk from most of these bars, it's just that base is about a minute away. it's also right down the street from the supermarket.
