Kofure Guesthouse, Kofure Village, Papoea-Nieuw-Guinea

Kofure Village, on the East Coast of Papua New Guinea's Main Land, lies on the coast at Kupare point, between Tufi Air strip and McLarens Fjord. It has an idyllic setting with a tropical white sandy beach. Perfect for snorkelling and swimming.

You will be taken (at extra cost) from the bottom of tufi airstrip by 'bikman' Mr Davidson Yariyari, who is one of the chiefs of the Toru-Yariyari clan. Take a ride across the Fjord in a traditional outrigger canoe. On the other side of the Fjord, Mr Davidson will take you through a local village and onto your bush walk. Along the way he will explain how the local people grow their crops. You will learn about medicine derived from various plants and trees. This is an easy walk and takes just over half an hour. You will then arrive at his Kofure Village. Drink fresh coconut juice and talk to his friendly people.

Meals at village stays around Tufi are cooked in the traditional way. Seafood including reef fish is always on the menu and the local specialty is freshly caught crayfish (lobster) cooked in a variety of ways such as boiled in coconut milk, barbequed and curried.

Meals always feature local vegetables and seasonal fruits including sweet potatoes, yams (similar to a stringy potato), ripe bananas, juicy pineapples, and local oranges. Meals are prepared over an open fire, often using the traditional Oro claypots. Guests will be fed, fed and fed some more. Your favourite food items can be brought with you from Port Moresby if required, your hosts will not be offended... especially if you share!
