La Casa de Henao is located in a safe middle-class residential district a few minutes' drive from the downtown area. It is served by buses and collectivos and is within walking distance of the Artilleria Funicular which, at the lower level, is only a few blocks from downtown.
Breakfasts are tasty and filling and are eaten with the hosts, thereby offering a chance to meet them and to chat about possible activities for the day.
Both José and his wife Karen speak excellent English and were extremely kind to us. José explained how to use the buses and collectivos as well as how to get to various tourist sites and restaurants - and which areas we should avoid. His assistance, we feel, allowed us to use public transportation and to visit restaurants which tend to be used by the people of Valparaiso (we saw no tourists). This allowed us a great insight into the city.
They also attempted to book us with a local tour company but, when this didn't seem to be working out, José offered to take us on a similar tour at a reduced price. José took us to an organic winery, to Pablo Neruda's house at Isla Negra and to the former whaling station at the small seaside town of Quintay - with a restaurant which specializes in excellent seafood - it was one of the best days of our South American trip.
The rooms are plain but clean; some have shared bathrooms. There are kitchen facilities for guests who wish to prepare light meals. There is also a comfortable guest sitting room nicely furnished and decorated with Chilean artwork and provided with television and audio equipment, DVDs, books and magazines (in several languages). Internet and a landline to USA and Canada are also available for guests.
José and Karen really ‘make’ the place. La Casa de Henao is definitely the place where we will stay when we return to Valparaiso.

Jose and Karen, the owners, were extremely helpful and made our stay great in Valparaiso. The location of the hotel is safe and fairly close to the downtown areas. The owners helped us to rent a car to tour vineyards in Casablanca Valley and other valleys. The breakfast they prepared very morning was delicious and kept us full until we had a late lunch. They had great recommendations for places to eat and visit.
Like all hotels in Chile during the winter, the room was cold. But after traveling throughout the country in winter, we have found this to be fairly typical. Otherwise, we really enjoyed our stay and loved the city of Valparaiso. Definitely a great place to stay for a visit to this city, especially for the price and location.

La Casa de Henao was wonderful. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel not only welcome, but like a part of the family. Jose and Karen [the owners] go out of their way to help you. They share with you plenty of advice about Valparaiso as well as providing you with a delicious and varied breakfast every morning. The house itself is impecably clean and the rooms are both comfortable and fairly spacious. This is definitely the place to stay if you are going to Valparaiso.
