Dancing Elephant Hostel, Koh Phangan, Thailand

I had a fantastic time at Dancing Elephant Hostel for the August 2011 Full Moon Party. I was a solo traveler and it was a great way to meet some really cool people from all around the world. Staying at the hostel made my Full Moon Party experience better than if I would have stayed somewhere else.

Location: 2 minutes from the center of the beach and the chicken corner, awesome! Plus it's on the hostel street where all the cheap thai food is hidden. Perfect.

Sleep Quality: Surprisingly even with 19 people in one dorm, I slept really well every night. You can't hear the music from the beach and people were very respectful.

Bathrooms: There is just one bathroom and a half bath with just a shower, but surprisingly it wasn't too bad even with so many people. There was usually a 5 minute wait to use it but the time would fly since you would be socializing in the lounge while waiting. If they fixed the sink in the half bath it would have made it even easier.

My favorite things about Dancing Elephant: The people were really cool, David the owner is really funny and kind, the free water is very appreciated, movies on the big tv were great, lockers were perfect, and the free body paint warm up parties were nice.

Things that could have been better: Just some small things but a bathmat/welcome mat would be nice before going up the stairs so people don't drag so much sand up into the sleeping area. Also during the briefing if they could tell everyone to please take a shower before going into bed it would also make it less sandy. The free water is awesome but always ran out, maybe have a spare ready to go.

Overall: I was happy to stay there and would do it again. It's a bit expensive for a shared 19 person dorm, even over full moon, but I had a good time and would recommend it to others.

I stayed at dancing elephant hostel during the full moon period of july 2010. i can honestly say that i could not have chosen a better place.
i chose this hostel over others due to its excellent ratings online and i was glad that i booked ahead.
the place is run by the wonderfully eccentric david and his beautiful wife nanda. on arrival i was told what to expect and some great advice on how to stay safe during the crazy full moon period.
i had a bed in the dorm on the 1st floor which had aircon and was comfortable.
the dancing elephant experience is more than facilities however. the ambience of the place with travellers from all over the world coming for what was 6 nights of amazing beach parties, culminating in the full moon party, was unlike anyother hostel on the island.
it was fairly quiet for those who wanted a night off from the parties which were no more than 3 minutes away on sunrise beach where the parties happen. the hostel is also close to 7-eleven, the atm, and very close to haad rin pier.
with a wii lounge and a great selection of movies, dancing elephant was extremely chilled during the day, and put on excellent pre-beach parties by night. paradise. (if youre into that of course). thoroughly recommended.

great owner David. Very helpful and friendly, also Remy! Fantastic location...dont take a taxi from the harbour to the hostel as its 5mins from haad rin harbour and full moon party beach. loads of shops, retaurants and bars close by including well known bars such as the outback bar, mushroom mountain and cactus bar.

great place to stay if you are single traveller. Very central, very clean and good atrmospher. Really near the fullmoon party but still pretty quiet! Great place to meet people!!
