We were the very first budget accommodation on the rock!
Opened in 1985 by Bill Bates, The hostel is proudly owned and operated by the Bates family.
We cater for those who are on a tight budget, We offer basic, Clean and an affordable place to stay but would still like to experience the great island life.
Located on the west side of the island - Perfect location, 1 min stroll down to the beautiful white sandy beaches, which is great for snorkelling. There is a Takeaway cafe, Hire Shop, Corner Store and bus stop all within 1 minute walk from the Hostel and not to forget gorgeous sunsets every night!
Having a lifetime of experience, we are experts on our islands history, culture; customs and aim to help you save money but still have the fulfilling island style experience and converting you to the laid back, fun loving island style.
Our spacious kitchen and dining area is great for everyone to cook and appreciate their own personal masterpieces. Large common area so it is really easy to socialize
We have Double, Twin, 3 & 8bed Dorm rooms available, all rooms include Bedding, Fan and a personal alarm clock (Roosters) - They run the island!
We also have fitted the rooms with mosquito netting and security screens for safety and comfort.
We offer a range of different activities all designed for budget travellers, creating a comfortable social atmosphere for everyone, From Quiz Nights to Coconut Husking demos & even the Cross Island Treks for those who are looking to be more adventure, and not to forget our World Famous International Nights every Saturday!

Overall: Cool. Bill and Anna who run it are friendly and know all the insider tips on the island.
Location: It is on the west side which is the best side for snorkeling and beaches. With the beach at the end of the road (100m) where the accommodation is on there are no complaints!!!! We also walked down to Budget (approx 800m south of the backpackers) to pick up the scooter we rented. Shops, internet cafe and Maori Cafe (mmmm good burgers!) are all within 100m of the backpackers.
Cleanliness: Overall was acceptable. No issues really.
Value: Cheapest accommodation on the island. When you are paying $260 less than The Rarotongan but use the same beach :D
Service: Bill picked us up and dropped us off at the airport which was cool. We rented snorkels off Bill for $3 a day (beats $12 from the dive place down the road) etc... awesome.

This is really the first time I have stayed at a backpackers so don't have a lot to compare it to. I had a double room. Whilst fairly sparce, there was one bedside cabinet and a plywood dresser/shelves. Plenty of room here to put all my travel items out. Two power points and a generous fan. There were 3 bays of lourve windows with mosquito netting and a light curtain. Room also had a mirror. Bed was quite comfy, but initially only had sheets. It is quite a warm country, however I did request some bedding which was then supplied. There is a generous kitchen with a fridge shelf and door compartment per room, and also a dry goods shelf per room. Plenty of crockery and utensils. Generous covered outdoor area and also an upstiars lounge. 8 showers in the complex and 4 toilets. I never had to wait to use facilities. Appeared to be no hot water available. Again, a hot climate so perhaps hot water not necessary but worth noting if you like a hot shower. This complex is run by a local native family who live on site. Take ear plugs as there are several roosters that like to compete vocally in the wee hours of the morning.
The location was very good. A very short walk down to the corner where there is a grocer, internet access (3 terminals - again no waiting) which costs about NZ$6 for half an hour. They bill in 5 minute increments and depending who is on the til that day you might be undercharged (I was undercharged twice). Also in this location is a burger bar/fish and chips/cooked breakfast/deserts. Good food! Petrol station is here also, with some crafts, kayak hire, mountain bike hire and I think also scooter hire. These businesses are all run by the same family. They are open til very late, often 10 or 10:30pm and despite the sign saying they were shut Sunday, they were open!
I very much enjoyed my stay here - location was good particularly considering the services that were nearby. Prices are fab considering most resorts cost minimum of $200 per night and most sit about the $300-$400 a night rate.
Would definitely stay here again.
