Over Centro Cultural do Bispo
The Centre Cultural do Bispo is an international melting pot for people with any kind of cultural ambition, either just to get inspired or actively take part.
Among the newest hostels in Salvador, this might be the most interesting.
Please note that the information on Google map concerning it’s location is wrong. Centro Cultural do Bispo is in Pelourinho, Centro Storico, in the heart of the Patrimonio by UNESCO, and not in Itapua, as indicated on Google map, Apparently there are two Rua do Bispo in Salvador.
It is made for people who travel low budget, stay longer and specially for people diving into the cultural life of Salvador. Don’t let the low price scare you off. This is quality, always clean, a little bit alternative maybe, but very fun.
At the same time it is a hostel, café/bar, and a spot for cultural events, like concerts and theater.
People who work there tend to be taken for guests and guests tend to be taken for staff.
There is a comfortable informality over the place and most people get quickly integrated into the warm and homely atmosphere.
The staff is constituted of a group of 8-9 people, living there on a more or less permanent basis, taking care of guests, organizing events and enjoying life.
The basic idea behind Centro Cultural do Bispo is to create a less commercial place where joy and meeting new people are understood as more essential than the money created in the process.
And we’re slowly getting there…

We will take good care of you from the first minute; give you a cozy bed and give you access to a personal locker for your belongings.
Relax in the bar, in one of our hammocks, meet up with the others in the heart of the hostel, the kitchen, or just read a book while relaxing on a bunch of pillows.
Our alternative breakfast is already famous for its variety; remember only to give us a hint if you want it the day before.
3 types of accommodation. You can stay in a classic hostel room with others, or in a hammock, or at last you can also put up your tent. The last option the cheapest.
For time being we serve breakfast under carnival and New Year, the rest of the year the kitchen is at the guest’s disposition.
For carnival 2010 we'll have great fun here. People of this house is best on parties. We'll serve the best breakfast ever, we'll give you good advises and generally we guarantee that you'll have the TIME OF YOUR LIFE!

Go to Pelourinho, the historic center, take the bus from the airport or elsewhere to Praça da Se. Walk along Praça da Se, and take right just before reaching Terrero do Jesus, the main square in Pelourinho. Look for Hotel Ibiza. Centro Cultural do Bispo is just 30 meters down the street.

I stayed in the Centro for the Salvador de Bahia Carnivals, and all I can say is that staying in the Centro was one of the best things that happened to me during this trip: Location is perfect , just in the center of Pelourinho; the hostal ambience is so relaxed and peaceful, that sometimes is hard to go out and leave the place..; Breakfast is made of fresh fruit, what is just simply delicious; the owners, Haider and Amanda, as well as the rest of people working there, made me feel like home: taking care, giving advices, talking, etc...
I think is really hard to find a place like this in Bahia...
Also on the no carnival season, they organize cultural events... so I cannot wait to save some money and go back to enjoy Salvador in another season other than carnival!

very nice and familiar place, I enjoyed a lot the time with the staff very kind and helpful. Only problem is the street where the hostel is, i raccomand all the visitors to not get there at night with all the laguages and to not go around with too much on you during the evening.

Very nice stay. Very clean place and well located. The owner Ryder is superb and runs the place in a relaxed easy going manner, is infinitely helpful, and this makes it a very good choice, particularly for backpackers, but for others too. It seems to attract an eclectic mix of travellers. Worth a return visit. Colin.
