We had a very enjoyable stay at the Sunrise Hostel. We were met at the railway station by our host, Paul...who took us on a private tour of the Taroko gorges and lunch at an aboriginal restaurant. His wife Rachel directed us to this little place around the corner of the hostel for yummy breakfast, and the night market is just about 10 minutes walk away. All the rooms in this hostel are individually decorated and the whole place is "spick and span" clean. We had a nice time chit-chatting away with Paul and Rachel....both speaks English and Cantonese, too.Wish we had more time, as we only stayed there for 2 nights. Rachel gave us a free ride to the railway station, which was another bonus.

My wife and myself stayed at this great place for 2 nights, a week ago.

Even though the location of the minsu was rather far from the train station (not walking distance), the owner was very kind to arrange for transport to pick both of us lost souls up after we arrived at Hua Lien Train station, even though it was rather late on a Sunday evening about 2030/2100H by then.

Despite the late hour, we were greeted with smiles and promptly brought up to our room.

The room was relatively spacious, with a nice, cozy decor, giving a very homely feeling. Basic necessities such as shampoo, body foam and towels were also provided, and replenished/changed as required daily.

We had a much needed rest on the first night, and went on a one day tour of Taroko Gorge the next day, arranged by the minsu owner.

The tour was flexible, and the guide (Pao Chen) was very understanding and experienced. We did not feel very rushed unlike most one day tours, and we had our choice of venues (all beautiful one way or another) to choose from. He was also kind enough to send us to and fro from the train station just to sort out some ticket matters for the rest of our trip in Taiwan.
He also made good recommendations on certain food items we could purchase for friends back home, and also helped to get the shop to arrange for the bulky items we purchased to be sent to another hotel in Taiwan for a latter part of our trip, so that we did not have the hassle of lugging them all along when we left Hua Lien.

Overall, we were quite sorry that we had to leave the minsu after just two nights, as the friendly and sincere service from Rachel and Pao, as well as the nice, clean and cozy room really made us feel at home in Hua Lien.
