Quirky and unusual, with a strong Moroccan influence. You'll either love it or hate it -- I absolutely loved it despite the lack of a shower curtain that resulted in a slightly flooded bedroom. My room was clean and the bed more comfortable than any of the other five hotels I stayed at during this trip. The host is charming and helpful, and his four-legged assistant, Maurice the pug is just adorable.
The only downsides are the lack of breakfast facilities and the slightly intimidating surrounding streets. The Riad itself is lovely, but set in a rather seedy area in the Arab quarter. As a lone woman traveller, I felt wary in the neighbourhood after dark, though I had no problems. I never did find the nearby cafe which has a breakfast arrangement with the Riad, but ended up at an Irish bar in the Plaza which served me a huge tumbler of fresh orange juice, large cup of coffee and half a toasted baguette stuffed with spanish ham and melted cheese, all for E2.80! Cheaper than the place I couldn't find. There is also tea and coffee available any time at the Riad.
I only travelled with carry on luggage and found the Riad within easy walking distance of both bus and train for the airport as well as being close to the cathedral and moorish forts.
I will certainly stay there again on my next visit to Malaga.
