In Kathmandu Guest House you can be assured that your memory is not a haze but a highlight that will sparkle throughout your life.
From a glance at the gardens of the Kathmandu Guest House where guests lie about reading, writing, sunbathing and relaxing, one might wonder whether this isn't a European park on a rare hot summer's day rather than the grounds of a 120-room Himalayan bolt-hole that was in days gone by a Rana mansion.
Cafe-Bahal, the hotel's courtyard restaurant, allows guests to enjoy the garden as well as keep an eye out for the likes of Ricky Martin, one of many well-known guests who have stayed here since it was converted into a hotel by Karna Sakya in 1967. Both the Maya garden facing the bright and cheerful-looking yellow Maya Annex, and the Buddha garden are open to all, while deluxe room guests have their own garden. The lobby, with its open fireplace, has a cosy atmosphere of its own for those days when it is too cold to venture outside.
Rooms range from ultra basic to aircon deluxe but even at the bottom of the accommodation ladder, guests can expect to find a sprig of fresh flowers in their room and plenty of colour, particularly in the deluxe rooms where the duvets are orange and the chair cushions pink. It's all very bright and breezy, like the exterior of the hotel. Other dining spots on the premises include, Laskus traditional Newari Restaurant and the GardenTerrace.
Kathmandu Guest House is Thamel's central landmark as it is near all the major places of interest, including the Royal Palace and Durbar Square.
