Moonlight Backpackers, Hartbeespoort, Zuid-Afrika

Moonlight Backpackers Lodge is a 50 hectares game farm with a variety of wildlife, in the valley below the Magaliesburg mountains.

Our closest towns are Hartbeespoort and Brits. Pretoria is only half an hour from us, and Johannesburg only an hour, which makes Moonlight Backpackers Lodge a great alternative for those people who do not want to stay in a town or city.

The area around Moonlight Backpackers Lodge offers a large variety of things to see and do. Pilanesberg national park is only one hour from us, and the world renowned De Wildt Cheetah Centre is only two kilometers from us. You can also visit Lesedi cultural village, the elephant sanctuary, the snake and reptile park, the arts and crafts markets, the monkey sanctuary, do a game walk in the Magaliesberg mountains and much more.

COMING FROM JOHANNESBURG (WILLIAM NICOL)

Take the N1 Pretoria / Roodepoort highway.

Take the William Nicol (R511) turnoff.

Drive past Monte casino & the Palazzo hotel.

Turn onto the R511 Hartbeespoort road.

It is 17 km from the N1 highway, & there is a sign "Hartbeespoort".

Continue until Hartbeespoort (It is some distance that you will be driving).

At the 4-way crossing (Spar on left, Total fuel station on the right), turn right.

Drive for 2,8 kilometers until the T-junction, turn left towards Brits.

Drive for 2,8 kilometers, Turn right onto the R513 Pretoria North.

Drive for 4 kilometers down the R513, you will see a dirt road to the left. There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign on the right.

Turn left down that gravel road.

COMING FROM JOHANNESBURG (HANS STRYDOM DRIVE)

Take the N1 Pretoria / Roodepoort highway.

Take the Hans Strydom (R512) turnoff.

Drive for 34,5 kilometers, past Lanseria airport & Lesedi cultural village.

Turn right at the T-junction. The sign says R511 Pretoria/Hartbeespoort.

Drive for 6,4 kilometers, and turn left. The sign says R511 Pretoria/Hartbeespoort.

Drive for 1,2 kilometers, and turn left at the T-junction. The sign says R511 Hartbeespoort.

Drive for 7,5 kilometers, and turn right at the 4-way crossing. (Spar on the left, Total fuel station on the right)

Drive for 2,8 kilometers until the T-junction, turn left towards Brits.

Drive for 2,8 kilometers, Turn right onto the R513 Pretoria North.

Drive for 4 kilometers down the R513, you will see a dirt road to the left. There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign on the right.

Turn left down that gravel road.

COMING FROM JOHANNESBURG,OR JOHANNESBURG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (HIGHWAYS ALL THE WAY)

Take the R 21 in the direction of Pretoria.

Turn off onto the N1 Pietersburg/Polokwane.

Turn off onto the N4 Rustenburg.

Payment for the toll road is R 6,80.

Follow the N4 for 24 km and turn off at the sign Pretoria West / Garankua. Turn left in the direction of Pretoria West.

The first road on the right hand side is the R 513 in the direction of Hartbeespoort.

Turn right there and follow the R 513 for approximately 13,8 km, until you see a dirt road turning out to the right. There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.

Turn right down that gravel road.

COMING FROM PRETORIA (WITH THE HIGHWAY - TOLL ROAD)

Take the N1 Pietersburg/Polokwane.

Turn off onto the N4 Rustenburg.

Payment for the toll road is R 6,80. Follow the N4 for 24 km and turn off at the sign Pretoria West / Garankua. Turn left in the direction of Pretoria West.

Turn right there and follow the R 513 for approximately 13,8 km, until you see a dirt road turning out to the right. There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.

COMING FROM PRETORIA (SUNNYSIDE)

Take "Beatrix" road.

Look out for the "Hartbeespoort" sign. Turn left into "Flowers" street.

At the T-junction, turn left, and immediately right again (almost straight over).

Be in the middle lane, at the second set of traffic lights.

Turn right at those traffic lights.

Take the left hand lane, which is marked "Hartbeespoort".

Continue straight for some time, until you see "Macro" on the left.

The road name is "Van der Hoff" street.

At the Macro turn right. The sign says "Ga-Rankuwa". You will go over a railway line.

Continue for nine kilometers (over the mountain), then turn left onto the R513 Brits road.

Continue foe plus minus 13,8 km, until you see a dirt road. There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.

Turn right down that gravel road.

COMING FROM PRETORIA (ZAMBEZI DRIVE)

Go down Zambezi drive, until you get to a T-junction. Turn left.

At the next T-junction turn right.

Follow that road for some distance, until you get to another T-junction. Turn left.

Almost immediately, turn right onto the R513 Hartbeespoort / Brits road.

Continue for plus minus 13,8 km, until you see a dirt road. There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.

Turn right down that gravel road.

COMING FROM PILANESBERG NATIONAL PARK

Take the N4 towards Pretoria.

Take the "Hartbeespoort / Randburg" offramp.

Turn right at the T-junction.

Turn left at the next T-junction.

Follow the road past the curio markets.

Turn left at the first 4-way stop (fuel station on the corner)

Keep going straight until you get to another T-junction. There is a fuel station on the corner.

Turn right at this T-junction.

The first road tuning out to the left is the R513 Pretoria north. Turn left into that road.

Drive for 4 kilometers down the R513, you will see a dirt road to the left. There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.

Turn left down that gravel road.

Moonlight backpackers is 1 kilometer down the road on the right. It is the first house with a brick wall.

COMING FROM KRUGER NATIONAL PARK & MOZAMBIQUE

Take the N4 to Pretoria.

Take the N1 Pietersburg/Polokwane.

Take the N4 Rustenburg. (Almost no traffic on this highway)

Follow the N4 for 24 km and turn off at the sign Pretoria West / Ga-Rankuwa. Turn left in the direction of Pretoria West.

Take the first road to the right (R513 Hartbeespoort / Brits).

Follow the R513 for 13,8 km; turn right into the dirt road.

There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.

Turn right down that gravel road

Moonlight backpackers is 1 kilometer down the gravel road on the right.

COMING FROM ZIMBABWE (Beitbridge border post)

Take the N1 to Pretoria.

Take the N4 Rustenburg. The turnoff is just after Petroport (the restaurant that goes over the highway).

Follow the N4 for 24 km and turn off at the sign Pretoria West / Ga-Rankuwa. Turn left in the direction of Pretoria West.

Take the first road to the right (R513 Hartbeespoort / Brits).

Follow the R513 for 13,8 km; turn right into the dirt road.

There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.

Moonlight backpackers is 1 kilometer down the gravel road on the right.

COMING FROM BOTSWANA (Martins Drift / Groblers Brug border post)

Drive to Tom Bourke (Only a few kilometers).

Take the R572 to Ellisras.

Take the R510 to Thabazimbi.

Take the R511 through Brits, towards Hartbeespoort.

Turn onto the R513 (Pretoria North).

Drive for 4 kilometers; turn right into the dirt road.

There is a "Moonlight backpackers" sign.
