Chefchaouen is situated in the mountains of Rif, just inland from Tangier and Tetouan. Chefchaouen must be the safest place in Morocco and there will be no warnings against walking around in the streets even in the middle of the night.

But Chefchaouen has many attractions, and these apply to all types of travelers. The city is simply beautiful, with simple houses with illuminatingly white walls and doors as blue as the sky above you. Every street is better taken care of and cleaner than any other city I have visited in my life. But that's not all: everything here is dramatically set climbing up two mountains before the city ends in the water source where small kids swim in the most idyllic surroundings you have ever seen.

The main bus station is a fifteen minute walk from the medina. There are usually a couple of petit taxis waiting for a customer at the entry. Don't pay more than Dh 10 to get to the medina. If it is hot, or, as is very likely, you have just endured a long coach drive to the town, you should seriously consider climbing into one of these taxis. Likewise, coming to Chefchaouen in the middle of the cold season can only make the ascending walkways as punishing as in the summer. With a heavy backpack, the walk up to the hotels of the town can be fairly strenuous!
