Over Rio Drake Lodge

Welcome to our little ecofarm and lodge in the rain forest of the Osa Peninsula in Drake Bay, Costa Rica.

We are a Costa-Rican - Swiss couple and are lucky to live in a beautiful place called Drake Bay that we would like to share with you. Drake Bay is a very remote and natural place where according to legends Sir Francis Drake hided a treasure. We invite you to walk on the steps of Sir Francis Drake and discover its natural treasures as the huge biodiversity of Corcovado National Park, the underwater world at the Cao Island, the beautiful 4km pristine beach and many more.

Rio Drake Lodge is located near the River Drake that gives the name to our lodge and farm. You find us five kilometers north from the center of Drake Bay, a really private and quiet place. We provide accommodation with four guest rooms and cook for our guests in our restaurant. In the evening, we use light from our solar panel for the dining platform and candles for the rooms. In front of the rooms, there are several hammocks under a traditional palm leaf roof where you can relax and observe pure nature just around here.

On our farm, we grow several fruit plants and raise horses. Because of the proximity of our lodge to the forest, a lagoon and the sea, you can observe various species of animals in the next environment: scarlet macaws, parrots, toucans, white face monkeys, raccoons, caimans, kingfishers, pelicans, humming birds, fire flies and many more. In the nearby village El Progreso you can also find espheras - stone balls from the pre-Columbian poque.

From our restaurant you are able to observe marvelous sunsets over the pacific sea and the Cao Island. Cross the river by canoe or pass a hammock bridge and you get to a 4km long lonesome beach with coco palms, excellent for relaxing. Or you can discover the environment on a tour as horseback riding, hiking in the Corcovado national park, snorkeling or diving at Cao Island, bird watching, crocodile tour and many more.

As part of our social commitment we realize community projects with volunteers for jobs like painting the school, making a hammock bridge, trails, connecting drinking water to school, cleaning the beach and patrolling for the turtles.

Our lodge is next to the Drake Bay airport, what makes the access really easy (normally only two little planes at 9 a.m. and 12 o\'clock, so it is still a very quiet place). Rio Drake Lodge is situated before the Rio Drake, which is often too high to cross for cars in the raining season.

If you look for a pure nature experience, this is the right place for you. We are waiting for you!

If you are looking for peace and quiet and beautiful nature this is the place to stay. Just a few steps from the lodge there is primary rainforest where you can spot monkeys, sloths, toucans, macaws and other exotic birds and animals. On the beach next to the lodge you can see the most amazing sunsets, and the best thing is that it is almost always deserted. Edu, the owner, has a passion for what he does and is always willing to help you with whatever you need. He organized a trip for me to the national park Corcovado, an absolute must for those interested in seeing animals. Also he cooks very nice food and gives you free coconuts whenever you want. This little paradise is the most amazing place I have ever been to, and I will definitely stay here again one day.

Dit is een Vertrouwde Recensie. Waarom?

If you want to stay in this south-western corner of Costa Rica, one of the most beautiful places in the world, near unspoilt primary rainforest and the beach where Sir Francis Drake buried his treasure, and don't have the budget of a multimillionaire, stay here. The warm hospitality and unfailing generosity of the host, Edu (Sabrina was away when we stayed) more than compensates for the cold showers and lack of electricity.

Next to the Drake Bay airstrip (recently tarmacked), this ecolodge is a pure delight for lovers of wildlife. We saw Jesus Christ lizards, iguanas, innumerable frogs and countless birds, from vultures to colourful tanagers, literally just outside our door, as well as macaws, toucans and flocks of parakeets within a hundred yards, while in the National Park nearby coati, agouti and monkeys abound (not to mention the odd deadly snake). Any tours or transfers are faultlessly organized by the ever patient and attentive Edu, and there are fascinating free walks on the beaches and around the village. Meals are provided at reasonable prices (for Costa Rica, not the cheapest place on earth), and are delicious.

If you take up this recommendation come by light aircraft (we ended up participating in a search-and-rescue mission when we took this option) or by boat via the mangroves. Finally, head torches and plenty of DEET will improve your experience of this most remarkable of locations - a stay you will never forget.
