Kunnola Beach House is a traditional Kerala house situated in a tranquil little beach village on the secluded Kizhunna Ezhara beach in Kannur, Kerala. Nestled in a coconut grove next to one of Kerala’s least explored and beautiful beaches, Kunnola Beach House gives you the chance to relax and unwind in the lap of nature with only the trees, the unspoilt golden beach and the blue waters of the Arabian Sea for company.

If you ever get tired of lounging on the beach, being caressed by warm waters or unwinding under coconut trees, there are many local attractions that you may wish to visit. We can help in arranging your programme for any of the activities mentioned below

Ayurveda, or the science of life, is an alternative school of medicine comprising ancient health remedies and practices for wholesome living. We can help arrange Ayurvedic treatments and massages for you at a location close by.

Yoga:

Yoga is an ancient form of meditation and exercise that helps you improve your physical, mental and spiritual well-being. We can help you find yoga classes or arrange for a private teacher at the beach house or close to its premises.

Theyyam:

A ritual form of worship unique to the North Malabar region of Kerala, Theyyam incorporates thousand-year-old traditions, rituals and customs. Theyyam festivals and performances are celebrated with great vigour in Kannur district and we can arrange for you to attend one of these events.

Historical monuments:

This region of the Malabar has been coveted by the Arabs, the Portuguese, the Dutch, the British and numerous Indian princely states, making it rich in history and tradition. There are many destinations worth visiting and we can help you with your programme. A few destinations are mentioned below.

St. Angelo's Fort was built in 1505 by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, and is on the coast about 3 km from Kannur town. The Arakkal museum run by the government of Kerala is located at Ayikkara close to Kannur city. The museum is within the erstwhile palace of the Arakkal family, the only Muslim royal family in Kerala. Thalassery Fort built by the British East India Company in 1708 is also worth a visit. Ezhimala, the capital of the ancient Mooshika kings, is an ancient historical site set in a cluster of hills, 38 km from Kannur. It was a flourishing sea port and centre of trade in ancient Kerala.

The closest houseboat cruises along the picturesque Kerala backwaters are near Nileshwaram, approximately 70 km away. We can help you book a houseboat cruise with prior notice.

Shopping:

Known as the Land of Looms and Lore, Kannur is famous for its cotton textiles. You can visit the Handloom Weaving Centre in town to view and buy the many products made by local weavers. One can also shop for coir products, pottery and other arts and crafts from Kerala. Fried banana chips are an item that most visitors are sure to buy.

Temples/Mosques:

The famous Madayi Mosque was built by Malik Iban Dinar in 1124 AD and is about 22 km from Kannur. It is believed that the marble used to built the mosque was brought from Mecca.

The Juma Masjid in Thalassery town is one of the most beautiful mosques in the district. It is said to be more than a thousand years old and has been rebuilt in the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture.

Parassinikadavu Muthappan Temple, 20 km from Kannur, is a Shiva temple and attracts people from all sections of society irrespective of religion or caste.

The ancient Thiruvangad temple, dedicated to Rama, is generally known as the Brass Pagoda from the copper sheeting of its roof.

Other beaches in the area:

The neighbouring Thottada beach, another pristine and beautiful beach, can be reached by climbing over the laterite rock formations at the end of Kizhunna Ezhara beach. The famous Payyambalam beach in town is a popular destination. Muzhappilangad Beach is unique in being a drive-in beach and has a 4-km stretch that one can drive on. Approximately 100-200m further south of Muzhappilangad Beach is a private island called Dharmadam island. The view of Dharmadam island from the beach reminds one of Phuket.

Nature tours:

The Snake Park at Parassinikkadavu is situated 18 km from Kannur town and is the only one of its kind in north Kerala.

The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary is 65 kms east of Kannur. It is home to a vast variety of flora and fauna endemic to the Western Ghats.

Moppila Bay is a natural fishing harbour near Fort St. Angelos, 3 kms from Kannur. Today, Mopilla Bay has turned into a modernised fishing harbour, developed under the Indo-Norwegian Pact.

You can also contact the Malabar Natural History Society to find out about any events they may be organizing in the area. Past activities have included plant identification workshops, frog watches, and nature treks.
