Makarska is located in a naturally shletered harbour, protected by cape Osejava, and the Peninsula St. Peter. The city is contained within the slopes of the surrounding mountains (1762 m) which protects it from the harsh continental climate. Makarska has luscious Mediterranean vegetation and long hot summer with a refreshing breeze.

The sun shines more than 2750 hours a year with air temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius from June to September; the clear sea is warm from June to October (20 ° C).
