The Flora Macdonald Independent Hostel is set on the beautiful Sleat Peninsula on the Isle of Skye. It has stunning views over the Sound of Sleat to the mountains of mainland Scotland opposite. It is in a peaceful location, perfect for visiting local attractions. Individual and group bookings are welcome. The Hostel is an ideal stop for visitors arriving or leaving via the Mallaig-Armadale ferry. It has been run for over ten years by local crofter Peter Macdonald

Beautifully situated, guests often remark on the stunning views. The sunrise over the mountains of Knoydart opposite can be spectacular. Sleat is a popular base from which many visitors visit the whole island. The Hostel has become popular with families and backpackers alike. We are half a mile away from the Sabhal Mor Ostaig Gaelic College. The local area is popular with lovers of outdoor activities and also with those who wish to explore the rich culture and history of the Isle of Skye.
Owner Peter Macdonald is always happy to recommend places to visit and give to give guests the benefit of his extensive knowledge of Skye history. Peter is from Sleat and his family have lived in Kilmore for several generations. From Easter through to October the Hostel can get booked up so it is advisable to make a reservation well in advance. Situation 2.5 miles from the Armadale ferry The Flora Macdonald Hostel is the perfect place to start or end your visit to Skye and the outer Islands. Payment is by CASH ONLY
The accomodadtion comprises of two buildings. The original Hostel is in a converted stone farm building. It has a modern fully equipped kitchen. The common area has a wood burning stove and plenty of seating and tables. This building has two dormitories furnished with wooden bunkbeds. Each dorm has en-suite shower and toilet facillities. These rooms are designated as male and female athough at peak periods, and with the consensus of guests, these may be mixed.
The second building is adjacent and has three private rooms. These have capacity for two, three and four persons respectively. This building has a fully equipped kitchen and its own shower and toilet facilities. These bedrooms also have bunk beds. Each room has a television. In both buildings sheets and duvets are supplied. This is a no smoking property.
Sleat can be reached from two directions. The Caledonian Mcbrayne ferry runs daily from Mallaig on the mainland to Armadale in Sleat. Kilmore is 2.5 miles north of Armadale on the A851. Visitors who arrive over the bridge to Skye should travel along the A87 until they reach the township of Skulamus. Then turn left on to the A851 southwards towards Kilmore, the junction is well signposted to Sleat and the Armadale Ferry. From the turn off at Skulamus the trip is about 12 miles. The most prominent landmark in Kilmore is the church which is right by the main road. From the Church head up the lane directly opposite which leads up a quite steep hill for 500m. The The Flora Macdonald Hostel is is sign posted guiding visitors down a track on the left. At the end of the track, about 200m, you will see the Hostel. The local bus service also stops at Kilmore.
