Lisbon is one of the few remaining capital cities in Western Europe that still offers great budget accommodation.
The Old Town area of Lisbon offers up much of the budget accommodation coupled with fantastic attractions. When visiting Lisbon you'll be hard pressed not to find a budget hotel, guest-house or hostel within your price range. The Barrio Alto district has always been a personal favourite with winding streets, charming cafés and a slew of bargain stays. Move into Baixa and you will be slap in the middle of Lisbon's main attractions. While the Chiado modern shopping district starts to move you up into mid-range accommodation prices, bargains can still be found.
Barrio Alto contains the heart of Lisbon's night life. The initial steep hill into the area is lined with bars, clubs, cafés and old narrow streets leading into more of the same. Accommodation in this area is not overflowing but don't let this put you off as it's only a mere 10 minute walk into the centre of Lisbon and does have some great offers.
The charming cafés on every corner make up for any walking you need to do with cheap eats galore often coming in at under 5 Euro for a dinner time special. Moreover the accommodation here is filled with more charm than anywhere else in the city.
Baixa is an area at the very centre of Lisbon which borders Barrio Alto by foot and Chiado. This is where the majority of budget accommodation can be found with ease. There are numerous metro lines and trams linking this district to the rest of the city and beyond.
If you want a base to explore all of Lisbon's vast historical sights like Lisbon Cathedral, Praca da Figueira or St. Georges Castle they are within walking distance from Baixa. Likewise if you wish to take a trip out of Lisbon, Cais do Sodre (railway) is also within walking distance. Meanwhile in the Chiado area you'll be surrounded by modern day shopping streets and plazas. Accommodation moves up in price here which is worth considering, but for a first night or few last nights of luxury you can get some great room rates with amazing views of this fabulous old town area.
