The practicalities of arrival worked well and the flat is spacious and clean. The access route is via several steep sets of stairs and an outside metal passage over the roof: perfectly safe but not easy with luggage. Some of the lights inside the flat did not work, and the wardrobe drawers were broken. It was not obvious how to regulate the heating. In the newly tiled bathroom there is nowhere to hang towels or to put clothes, and you cannot leave your clothes in your bedroom because there are, as Dutch custom demands, no curtains except in sleeping rooms. Despite its central location the flat was quiet. There is a small shop next door with a limited range of groceries but all other nearby shops sell either clothes or souvenirs only, mostly in extraordinarily bad taste. Go to the Nieuwe Markt, where there are some stalls and a few shops, for groceries, or use the branch of Albert Heijn at the Dam.
