Whethu backpackers offers dormitory rates for homestyle living. Sleeping 30, our rooms range from 6 or 8 person dormitories to beautiful double bed-rooms with en-suite facilities. Recently refurbished, the rooms open onto a spacious open plan living area shared by guests, before leading out onto our raised decking offering stunning views of the Xhosa 'Finger Village'. A large garden is available for those who wish to camp or for the sun worshipers among you.
The property is situated just 1km away from the city center and Rhodes university campus. Just down the road from a large local convenience store and ten minutes walk from the best that Grahamstown has to offer in nightlife, eateries and shopping. Bicycles are available for those wishing to explore a little further.
If you want the best of both worlds, the family B+B experience with the backpackers vibe, then Whethu is for you. Our friendly staff are waiting to welcome you.

We arrived there late in the evening at about 8pm, the Doorbell , didn't seem to be in operation - we had to phone to be let in - once the chap that was on duty opened up for us & let us in he was quite helpful with assisting to carry bags. We rented the en suite room - The mattress' were lumpy - when lying on the bed you felt the springs coming through - the Shower pressure was good but - you had to jump around in the shower to get wet & the nozzel of the spray was very high so it was very difficult to adjust - there were towels provided. In the morning we awoke - after a rough nights rest to find that there were stains on the pillow cases. In order to get the plug point working opposite the beds we had to switch on the plug behind the beds ........ We felt that the cleanliness of this room needed some drastic attention. & PERSONALLY feel that if we had stayed in the main section of the house it would have been fine - as it looked as if the bunk beds & mattress' looked better - the kitchen was clean and tidy - the staff in the morning were helpful and friendly. We decided to move onto Port St Johns instead of spending another night due to family commitments & work commitments. The room we stayed in just needs fine tuning - window glass fixed, mattress changed ( without the base being on bricks) & shower nozzel to be changed so that one could have a proper shower, door for shower needs a bit of paint - as the room looked as if it was still a work in progress. Parking was secure.Think it was over priced for what we got.
