I had a great time at Lagoa guest house, this was my first stay in a hostel dorm on my round the world trip. I was welcomed by the very kind and helpful Wesley and Juliana and they made me feel at ease straight away. During my stay I met many great people and we all went out together and ventured the great city of Rio. The guest house is a great location to get to all parts of Rio and Juliana and Wesley were only too happy to help with Brazilian websites and organising day and night events in Rio. Thanks again for the flight booking help and the great barbecue. I hope to be back when I visit Rio again for sure.

When we arrived we were met by the owners, Wesley and Julianna and made to feel welcome right away. Our room was basic and clean; our window opened out onto the patio/kitchen area so was a little noisy at times but all in all we had no complaints.

The lounge/breakfast area was a great place to relax and chat with other travellers and on a couple of occasions Wesley and Julianna had a bbq to which all were invited. Breakfasts were really good, crusty rolls, ham, cheese, fruit, juice and coffee and sometimes cake as well - a great way to start the day.

The hostel is situated really close to the lake and you can walk to Ipenema beach. There are also many buses that run to Ipenema, Copacabana, Central and the Botofogo metro.
Once you've taken the first bus ride everything gets easier and its a great way to see the city. The tram ride up to Santa Teresa is also a must - try to do it in the evening when the view across the city is spectacular.

This was our first stop in Brazil which was made all the more enjoyable by the friendly, helpful staff at Lagoa Guest House - thanks to Wesley, Julianna and Rory

The rooms are clean, the showers are hot and the breakfast is delicious. But where Lagoa goes above and beyond even the most hopeful expectations is the friendliness and hospitality of the Brazilian owners Juliana and Wesley. They have offered tips on what to do in the area, have made suggestions for restaurants, guidance on using the buses, arranged laundry pick up, helped with international calls and even took the whole hostel for a night out in Lapa.
We originally planned to stay for 3 nights, but between the wealth of things to do in and around Rio, and the fact that the Guest House now feels so much like home, we stayed for several weeks.
If it is at all possible, we would strongly recommend attending one of their barbeques, or failing that, do make sure that time is set aside for a long chat in the evening. They are not like guest house hosts; it is more like they have invited you into their own home. They are certainly now great friends.
Given that Lagoa is the standard by which all other Guest Houses and hostels will be measured during our travels (the bar now being so high), we would give Lagoa 100%.
