The Mountain House is a unique and delightful place to base your Arthur's Pass vacation. The national park at your doorstep provides numerous day walk and tramping opportunities. In winter take your choice of five local ski fields.

Day trips include Avalanche Peak and the longer trips include the Cass/Lagoon, Goat Pass or the three day crossing of Tarn Col from the Edwards to the Hawdon.
We have lockers to store your gear between tramps, a shuttle service to get you to where you are going and a group of staffers who know the Park.
We are in a birdlovers paradise with kea, great spotted kiwi and rock wrens amongst the local denizens. Rock climbers and mountaineers have many routes to choose from. Cave Stream is a great adventure. At the end of the day, a drink and meal at the Wobbly Kea in town is a great way to top it all off.

Arthur's Pass Village is located in the centre of Arthur's Pass National Park, in the middle of the Southern Alps.
By road it is 154km from Christchurch on Highway 73. From Greymouth, go south on Highway 6 to Kumara Junction. Turn east on Highway 73 and ascend to Otira then over the mountains to Arthur's Pass township, a distance of 100km.
Please note that in June through October snowfalls can occur. Winter driving conditions may sometimes require the use of tyre chains for your vehicle.
The Tranz Alpine train (Ph. 0800 872 467) runs daily to Arthur's Pass township, from Christchurch and Greymouth. This trip from Christchurch is considered to be one of the "great rail journeys of the world", as it passes through spectacular gorges and alpine scenery.
By bus, you can choose either Atomic Shuttles (Ph 03 322 8883) which travels daily from Christchurch and Greymouth / Hokitika, or the West Coast Shuttle (Ph 03 768 0028).
Within the national park the Mountain House Shuttle can provide transport to most track heads, or local ski fields.
