There was originally a group of eight of us, for who I had booked three rooms in total with an AC back in August for a stay in the middle of Christmas holidays for one night in Tamarindo.
I began getting e-mails from the owner after I had already made the booking, in which they said they were having difficulty accommodating us for only one night since we were taking up three rooms in their peak season, and for this reason they had to turn other people away. I understood what the owner was saying and offered to pay for two nights (but stay only one), so as to avoid losing the accomodation. There were lots of e-mails back and forth, in which eventually we ended up having to "compromise" quite a bit. Our stay was booked for the end of December, but I had already booked the stay in August. As Tamarindo is a very busy tourist location, it needed to be booked well in advance. Early December, we received another email in which the owner asked us if it would be ok for us to all stay in one room withou AC. Since it was so close to our stay, and I was afraid they would turn us away if I said No, I conceded and agreed this would be ok.
The beds ended up being extremely uncomfortable, and for paying two nights and staying one, i think we definately did NOT get value for money. We all slept very badly and all had to share one pretty ugly looking bathroom. In addition, the other people in the hostel were making lots of noise till 4 am, and we all had to get up at 5am the next morning. The receptionist tried to then even argue this was very good value even for a dorm style room.
I must say that I thoroughly disagree; although I agreed to the room after several e-mails at the time, I do not think there was much of a choice for us, and we definately paid more than the room was worth (US$40 per person for 8 people to stay in one room with very uncomfortable beds and no AC). Since I had originally booked three seperate private rooms with bathrooms and AC, there should have been a discount for us for this one room when we arrived, but there was not.
I would have to say I do not recommend this hostel to anyone. Our group travelled around a bit and got a very bad impression of Costa Rica, mainly due to this incident.
