Originally it was a property of the Jesuits, and then in 1804 it was turned into a graveyard by architect Brongniart.Pére Lachaise hosts famous graves: those of Chopin, Jim Morrison, La Fontaine, Daudet, Sarah Bernardt, Colette, Proust, Moliére, Champollion ... In 1871, and the Cemetery unfortunately became notorious for the Mur des Fédérés: a wall against which more than 2,000 Commune fighters were shot. Pére Lachaise has been described as 'a city of the dead in the middle of the city of the living'.
