Hotel Alizea, Avignon, Frankrike

In Jan 2011, I had booked a three night stay for April 2011 but due to a change in my traveling plans, I wrote to the hotel in end Feb 2011 to inform them that I will be cancelling the first night and hence only stay two nights at their property. Imagine my shock when icheckedin and was told that they had already billed to me via my credit card the first night's stay. Even by showing them the email that I had written to the hotel in Feb did not seem to reverse the amount that they had charged to my credit card as the person in charge of Internet bookings would only be I the next day.

The receptionist told me that if I wanted to stay the night, I would have to pay a higher rate as the rate is now different - a fact which I can accept as rates dotend to change. The receptionist would not let me use his calculator nor sit in the cafe to search for my printed mails and Internet bookings. We decided to pay the amount and settle the matter with the person in charge of internet bookings the day after as it was after all the Easter weekend and fear of not finding an accommodation was high.

We met with the person in charge and was refunded what was due to us.

The rooms smelt like a giant ashtray, the mattresses had no spring in them and the toilet fixtures had a tendency to fall off easily. Sound proofing was also a problem and you could hear people come and go in the wee hours of the morning.

The only good point the hotel has is its good location. It is just across the road from the tourist information centre and is within walking distance to the train station, Palace of the Popes and Pontiac du Avignon.

Overall a bad experience. Thank goodness Avignon was a beautiful town to visit. If you do not mind the negative points of the hotel, I guess €45 for two per night is a steal.
