pearl64 Booked on the recommendation of a colleague. The positives- very warm welcome, even though it wasn't quite 10am I was given the key to my room and shown around the 'resort'. The staff were very quick to learn names and to introduce themselves. Menu in restaurant is varied. Very relaxing and I really did enjoy my stay. Small but lovely swimming pool. Lots of sun loungers dotted around the place- I had one outside my bungalow which I took the liberty of 'claiming' and the bar staff were happy to send an icy Kiliminjaro on request. Negatives-these are not deal breakers but I feel they are worth pointing out. Fridge in room didn't work- door didn't close, pretty rusty. Wasp 'nests' in bathroom. No screen on bathroom window so the odd mosquito go in. Wednesday night is 'Pub Quiz night' in the restaurant..even though I wasn't bothered (traveling solo) it may have been an issue if you were there for a 'romantic interlude'. Transfer to Stone Town- shared with travellers to the airport- bit of a money spinner as they did one trip, but go paid twice. Plus, had to wait on the other people. Went on a day trip snorkelling- wasn't told to leave room key so no 'housekeeping'. It's unusual for the cleaning staff not to be able to enter the room. Restaurant service was often very slow, but this was balanced by the option to pre-order (not always sure of what I wanted for dinner when asked to order at 4pm). I did a 'Safari Blue' day trip- paid $60, others said they paid $40. When I told the 'tour man' (seems to be someone who operates independently of but with hotel endorsement) I was disappointed I'd paid more, he said we'd all paid the same...someone wasn't quite telling the truth... The trip itself was fine but nothing extraordinary- 1 hr transfer to an abandoned resort, onto a home made boat, off to the 'sand pile' . We detoured to the 'lagoon', sail in sail out, then dropped off three of the 'crew' to prepare lunch. Spent some time at the 'sandpile', had some fresh fruit, 'chocolate brownie' and sodas, then off to the lunch spot. Lunch was 'lobster', fish, octopus, rice, curry, salad...very enjoyable, but nothing spectacular. Then we had 'relaxing' time until the tide came in. 5 people, a shade cover and beach mat for 2... After people rested on wooden benches (not much else to do unless you wanted to cruise the 'shops') we were offered a tour to the baobab tree...3 minutes walk away. Made our way back to the mainland then transfer back to hotel... Do the tours from Stone Town for half the price if you can.
