- Goodbye Greece
So tonight I ate my last authentic Greek gyro. Our 8 day stint in Athens has come to an end and tomorrow morning at 5:40 am we will be leaving for the airport to catch our flight to Rome. Posted by RRCogan in Mediterranean Roots | Jun 3, 2009

OK! This blog does require some movie research, so should you not have seen Eurotrip, please do so before reading on. As we got on the train in the morning hoping to be on the ferry to Greece that Posted by liznjules in My Backpack's too Heavy | Jun 2, 2009
- Thursday 28th May – Naxos
Filoti was another inland village we wanted to visit and do some walking from – it was one of the bigger villages in the relatively fertile centre of Naxos. Had a coffee in Filoti to start the day and then Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | Jun 1, 2009

Went in to the main town, Hora, for a few things – some shopping (food and pressies) and the internet for Jan for work. The latter was available via wifi at a Café for the cost of a coffee (which Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | Jun 1, 2009
- Tuesday 26th May – Naxos
This time our trip was north – across the middle of the island and then down to a fishing/tourist village (Appolonas). It was famous for a kouros – an unfinished large marble sculpture from BC. Apparently the sculptor started the Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | Jun 1, 2009
- Greece: Rhodes and Crete
Amazing. If I had to sum up Greece in one word it would probably be just that. Or Stunning. Or Tranquil. Or Mesmerizing. Or if I get 4 words it would be “just what Posted by amyandkev in Amy & Kev's Excellent Adventure | May 28, 2009
- On to Athens
We arrived in Athens on Wednesday afternoon and headed to our hotel in the city. We're staying at a really small hotel in the shadow of the Hilton called the Delice. Actually, calling it a hotel probably isn't Posted by RRCogan in Mediterranean Roots | May 29, 2009
- Monday 25th May – Naxos
Did another walk from the book and hoped it would be along better defined paths. This time it was a walk from one inland village to another, and back again by a different route, with some Pirgos and Byzantine Chapel Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | May 29, 2009
- Sunday 24th May – Naxos
Had a good night’s sleep (and although Jan heard the neighbouring mule/donkey bellowing, Dave didn’t).
Went on our first planned walk using a walk book we bought. The walk was great, but the walk book’s instructions were pretty rough and Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | May 29, 2009
- Saturday 23rd May – Naxos
Needed to go to town (Hora) for food so decided to look around. Navigated OK into a parking area at the back of the Kastro (old town/castle – mainly Venetian) although it’s all been built on the usual, earlier Mycenaean, Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | May 29, 2009
- Friday 22nd May – to Naxos Island
Up before 6.00 am (not Jan’s favourite time) to get the ferry. The seats in economy (no seat no.) are just loose seats at tables dotted around different parts of the large ferry. Found a table for 2 in Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | May 29, 2009
- Thursday 21st May – Sounion - Pireaus
Today is the day we return the car and go to Pireaus, ready to catch the ferry to Naxos tomorrow.

- Wednesday 20th May – Sounion
Left the hotel (Yes!!) and headed off to Cape Sounion, south of Athens. Cape Sounion is the southern most point of Attica and the temple of Posiedon is built on the rocky outcrop on the cape. The temple was built Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | May 27, 2009
- Tuesday 19th May – Meteora - ??
Set off not being quite sure where we were headed to. Dave had read about a fishing village on the east coast – on the way back to Athens that sounded good. Thought we might stay there for a couple Posted by Jan_n_Dave in The BIG Greek trip | May 27, 2009
- Monday 18th May – Meteora
First job for the morning was finding somewhere to get a new tyre – relatively quickly and efficiently done due to the advice of the man from the hotel. Very pleased that not too time consuming and costly.

Hoy comienza el viaje hasta Napoles Italia.
Primero el tren hasta Patras, que en verdad hay que cambiarse de tren en el medio del camino. La primera parte es realizada en modernos vagones, muy parecido con los del metro.

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is diverse, unique, and demanding. Lacking some of the characteristic charm of smaller islands, Crete is not your typical Greek experience.
