- Day 3
I am not entirely sure what day it is, but it is our first morning in Muscat. I feel tired and confuse, but happy to finally be here. Even though I am sure that I Posted by SarahMay86 in Oman | Dec 21, 2006

- Oman, the First Day
Hello big world! I have been in Oman for almost 3 weeks now and I am just starting to feel settled. I hope y'all are doing fine. I miss all of you! My Posted by barbsworld in Oman | Mar 7, 2009
- Discovering Oman
It was about the time that I stepped off the plane that I realised that this was a completely different kettle of fish to the trips we had done previously. It was late June and even at 8:30am, the immense Posted by bruiserfen in "And I took the road less traveled" | Aug 19, 2007
- When it rains, it pours
Don't know if that metaphor is particularly applicable over here, but whatev. I've been a bit bombarded with stuff lately, so I'm trying to catch up on the entries. I've got a lot of stuff this week. Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Apr 28, 2007
- The home stretch...
It's hard to imagine that I only have 18 more days left in Oman. As we are finishing up over here, everyone in the group has been looking back. Our days in Mutrah seem like a year and Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Apr 28, 2007
- Going to Yemen?
Hot of the press. I just got my letter for the Yemen study abroad program for the summer. Not good, not bad, I'm an alternate. The good news is I survive to fight another day, the bad Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Apr 23, 2007
- Updates
Sorry for the total lack of updates recently/ We're now in ISP period, where we don't have official classes every day, and we're just working on our research projects. The thing is, it's getting up to 105 on Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Apr 21, 2007
- Back in Muscat
Sorry about the delays in posting, the traveling eventually caught up with me. Abu Dhabi was interesting, but pretty tame after being in Dubai. We visited a girls university, interestingly enough. The director is an American from Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Apr 15, 2007

So it might be even longer in between posts the next few weeks. The fact that this is going up is do in no small part to the ridiculous addicition I have with the Internet. The lack of Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 26, 2007
- It's raining, it's pouring
So forget what I said the other day about why stuff shuts down for rain. Driving through the city today, the storm caused some serious damage. It wiped out part of the road in front of the airport, Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 19, 2007
- Cliff jumping in Sur
This past weekend we went to the eastern part of Oman, and it might have been one of the craziest, but most fulfilling, weekends of my life. We went toured a bunch of wadi’s deep in mountain ravines, watched Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 18, 2007
- You know you live in a desert when…
… school gets called off because of rain. I woke up today to… thunder? Muscat gets about a sum total of 5 inches of rain every year, and we got about 4 of them today. It was, Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 18, 2007

The utter fascination that everyone in the Middle East has with Shakira warrants a brief mention. She is half Lebanese (I think on her mother's side), and consequently, this is the closest thing to someone from the Middle East Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 10, 2007
- Dick Cheney likes the Al Bustan
I went to dinner at the Grand Hyatt last night to hear a lecture with Dr. Salim, who is more or less the patron of the SIT program here. He gave the lecture pretty much just for SIT, including Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 10, 2007

When reading Theroux, I would often wonder how he could just happen to run into all these crazy people as he travels all over the various continents. Well, now I realize that it’s really just a matter of putting Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 2, 2007
- More fun on the diplo circuit forthcoming
Apparently I’ve just started to dip my toes into the diplomatic circuit. I’m going to be meeting with the head of the economic section of the American embassy fairly soon (insh’allah), and probably also the American ambassador, Gary Grappo. Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Mar 2, 2007
- Fun times with the Royal Omani Police
I came to Oman because I wanted to really get to know the Middle East and Oman. Well, when I found myself being questioned by the police in a police station, I knew that I was REALLY getting to Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Feb 20, 2007
- Warning: Stream of consciousness ahead
Alright, so this is gonna ramble a bit. It's hard to describe, but in the two and a half weeks that I've been in country, I've had a rather odd feeling the entire time. This trip doesn't feel Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Feb 18, 2007

- Less Theroux, more Lawrence
So on the plane ride over here, I was definitely in faux-Theroux mode, meeting all sorts of people going all sorts of places (Omar was off to Switzerland, Marie to Paris). Now, it's pretty much straight Lawrence of Arabia Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Feb 12, 2007
- Upcoming events
So here's a rough idea of what our group has ahead of us for the next two weeks:
Tomorrow: Going to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque to hear a lecture about Islam in pre-Columbian America (seriously)
Friday: Formal dinner. This Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Feb 12, 2007

Sorry about the delays between new posts, looks like it might become regular. Anyways, I'm finally moved in with my homestay family. They're great, and pretty fun too. Any worries I had about staying with a family Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Feb 12, 2007
- Shatti al-Qurm
I visited Shatti al-Qurm, or Qurm beach, yesterday. The area is unbelievably beautiful. If more authoritarian governments had places like Shatti al-Qurm, the people wouldn't be so pissed off (why DO I always study in authoritarian countries?). Posted by mc327503 in Rock the Casbah 2007 | Feb 7, 2007
