Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 22, 2009
Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 22, 2009
  • Cappadocia - Underground City A long time ago (presumably before grenades) in a land far away (actually right here, Turkey) underground cities like this were dug with a similar goal to castles: being easy to defend and hard to attack. The place can Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 21, 2009
  • Goodbye Turkey, Hello Syria It's amazing how immediately after crossing the border there is a lot less vegetation, and then a couple hours later it's almost nothing but desert. Also the desert isn't sand like I expected - it's dry soil and rocks. Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 24, 2009
  • Paragliding in Olu Deniz Was awesome. We were so glad to even be able to do it (see above) as the one we were supposed to do was cancelled (so we got up at 5:30AM for nothing). It started about an hour late, but Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 17, 2009
  • The Turkish bath Having never been to a bathhouse I didn't really know what to expect. We were pretty dirty from the succession of dust, seawater, and cold showers, so it seemed like a plan. Here it is in a nutshell: - Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 18, 2009
  • Eternal flame of Olympus At Cirali there are about 30 flames burning between the rocks on Mount Olympos (the site used to be called the eternal flame). Each is the size of a small fire, maybe a foot high, and the area smells Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009
  • Cappadocia - Caves Cappadocia looks like this, the story behind it is something about retreating glaciers and erosion. [img=http://photos.tra Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 21, 2009
  • Saklikent Gorge The gorges make me regret having not ever gone to the gorges in Ithaca when I was at Cornell. We spent 3 hours at Saklikent gorge and still didn't go as far as it goes. No one else Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 16, 2009
  • Prices and rules of buying stuff Prices in Turkey are generally not too high, but there is generally a lot of room to bargain. Tips 1 and 2 below are gleaned mainly from a couple experiences in Istanbul; the rest are observations. Here are Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 21, 2009
  • Pamukkale - Calcium rocks The white is rocks, though it looks like snow. On the drive over it looked so soft, but no, it was rocks. This is a UNESCO world heritage site since this year, so the price of admission to see it Posted by chrisvasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 15, 2009

Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009
Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009
[img=http Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009

Ly Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009
[img=http://photos.travellerspoint.com/211584/20090715_059. Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009
Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009
Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 20, 2009
Posted by suevasil in Overland for 8 Months | Jul 19, 2009
