Pingyao (平遥) was the financial centre of China during the Qing dynasty and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following the collapse of the dynasty, the financial centre transferred to Beijing leaving Pingyao in limbo.

We arrived in Pingyao on the early train and were met at the train station by a very friendly man and taken to the hotel. The location was perfect - a little off the main street, which meant it was really quiet at night, but a two minute walk from where everything was happening.
