Coimbra

Coimbra (pronounced Queembra) is located between Lisbon and Porto. Its university is very old but most of its original buildings were destroyed in the major earthquake of 1755. The town is situated on a steep hill, although there is a significant part on the far side of the river Mondego.

It's a very practical place to stay for a couple of days (not for a romantic holiday). Very clean, well located, the staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast's good and you don't need to wake up at 8 am to get it. Comfortable 12h00 check-out time. ... more

  • Travel from Porto to Salamanca
Hi everyone, What's the best way to get from Porto, Portugal, to Salamanca, Spain? If I go by train, do I need to go south to Coimbra, then over to Guarda, then into Spain? Or is there a more direct route? ...

  • Portugal, Jan 2012
Hey guys I'm travelling to Portugal in early January. I'm driving from Conil in the south of Spain. I was thinking of having a couple days in each of Lagos, Libson and Coimbra.

I felt a glow of satisfaction as the bus to Serpins pulled away with us on board. We headed out of Coimbra for the day to see some hill country around Lousa. (there is an important tilde there but I don't know how to do that). The town is only 25 km from Coimbra but via forested steep sided valleys which ...

  • Woaming in the wuins
Conimbriga was once a "big" Roman city, abandoned as invaders pressured the locals and power shifted up the road to Coimbra. Today we wandered around the buildings revealed by archaeologists, with several baths, houses, forum, amphitheatre and massive walls. They say it is only about 15 percent ...

For a hotel, the Comfort Inn offers little in the way of facilities. We have stayed in hostels previously with better facilities for a smaller price.
