Budget Accommodation in Cooktown

good short notice accommodation in NE Aus.
In july/ early August my family will be travelling around east Aust. (Cairns to Cooktown) we would like to take each day at a time, but unsure about how easy it will be to pick up accommodation at short notice. Any one know? Also, I'd appreciate it if anyone can recommend places for my 9 year old daughter ...
