Plitvice Lake is definately place to visit in Croatia but if you want to hike in the mountines then go to Northen Velebit (http://www.np-sjeverni-velebit.hr/novi_web/Velebit_eng/index.htm). In Plitvice you have hotels to stay in (quite ok) and in N. Velebit there are small houses but check on the web ...
