Sitting on the wide and slow Daugava river in the heart of the Baltics, Riga is the capital of Latvia and has the feel of a city that is just coming in from "the cold" of communism. A pretty historic centre mixes a little uneasily with concrete municipal buildings and Soviet-designed transport.
