It is odd to arrive at an international port that is over 3,860 metres high. But that is how high Puno is located. This small town has an odd mixture of international port, tourist centre and Andean meeting place. Being the only easy way to access Lake Titicaca on the Peruvian side the town attracts many tourists.

Peru: Arequipa or Puno?
Perhaps do the Colca Canyon as opposed to Puno... and then what you can do is stop off in Copacabana enroute to La Paz. I have done both Puno side of Lake Titicaca and Copacabana (Bolivia side of Lake Titicaca) and I am a little biased because I much do prefer Copacabana to Puno. It is a lot less ...
