Puducherry is one of the Union Territories in India, about 135 kilometres south of Chennai. It's also the name of the capital and largest agglomeration. Both were named Pondicherry until 2006. The total territory has around 1 million inhabitants, of which approximately one third lives in Pondicherry City.
