LG Guesthouse & Hostel

LG Guesthouse & Hostel

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Best place to start your adventures in Mongolia.

I had stayed in the LG guesthouse in early June for a day, and recently From August 5 until August 9th during my business trip to China. LG guest house is simply the biggest guesthouse in UB (whooping six floors!) and the room rate was very affordable. Regular dorms with 4-10 bunk beds cost only 6-7 USD per night and regular twin-bed room will cost 20 USD per night. (You can also use the local currency as payment) Laundry under 3 kg cost 3 dollars per wash.

What drew me to LG guest house in the first place was it's location. It is only a 5 minute walk from the UB train station, a fact most foreign tourists appreciate since they prefer to come by train. Once you get there, check-in is surprisingly easy. It is still better to contact the place ahead and book, since rooms might not be available during peak season.

Secondly, the staff are all very helpful and cheerful; they also can speak basic English and usually understand your requests and questions right away. During my stay of 4 days, I had never seen a foreign guest having trouble with explaining himself/herself to the staff.

It is also worth noting that the LG guesthouse has it's own restaurant establishment in the first floor thus your meal is never far away from you. The restaurant serves traditional Mongolian cuisine as well as Western food, even Japanese/Korean hotpot! The price is again, very affordable, certainly not more expensive than most comparable restaurants. Guests can have free breakfast in each morning, though the breakfast will only consist of toasted bread, butter and jam, and coffee and tea. Not exactly a royal gourmet but enough to keep your stomach from rumbling. You can also order breakfast such as Omelet if you are really hungry.

LG Guesthouse also offers seasonal tours to those who are interested in exploring Mongolia in full. Prime destinations include Lake Hovsgol, the Gobi Desert, and many more. Should you wish to travel with a different tour group, the staff will be happy to help you arrange it. The place has its own transport and very friendly drivers who can also speak English. Should you wish to go on a cycling tour in Mongolia's countryside for many weeks they can store your luggage safely until your return.

The guest house is kept clean though those who live in the dorm will share shower stalls and bathrooms. It is better to bring cleaning supplies such as soap and toilet paper with you since they run out fast.
The place has wireless internet so as long as you brought your laptop, you should have no problem connecting. The net speed in my estimation was 215Mb--not very fast but you certainly can send e-mails and chat online without a hitch. It is also worth noting that the restaurant downstairs has a PC with internet that is free to use by guests. They have a printer as well which was very convenient.

There are almost no drawbacks when you choose the LG Guesthouse. Though the location is relatively far away from the center of the city, it is mere 10 minutes walk from the nearest bus station that can take you through most of the city, and only 10 another minutes to reach the city center, should you wish to travel on foot.
The guesthouse is located next to two Karaoke places, and at times it can get noisy, especially if you stay in the dorms. Those who have trouble sleeping, I would suggest you to book the twin-bed room.

That's pretty much my impression so far, and allow me to say again that the LG Guesthouse is one of the best, and certainly the biggest guesthouse in UB, Mongolia. Enjoy your stay, for I had certainly enjoyed mine. Cheers.
