Madeira Island, Portugal
Modern house with everything you need. In a quiet location near the village. Andreia and Ruben are very open, friendly and helpful; we had great talks about everything from surfboards to bread making to the alternative economy. Ruben prepared a fantastic bacalhau (cod) dinner on my birthday, which happened to be during our stay. So if you are looking for something a bit different from a generic hotel or guesthouse, we'd heartily recommend trying the North Coast Guesthouse. To get the most out of it, come for at least a few nights (as we did). We will certainly be back again (if we can wangle another trip to Madeira).
Good value for money if you book it with a discount - otherwise a bit expensive. Staff was mostly friendly and helpful, with a few exceptions. Comfortable rooms, looked all a bit old, but worked fine.
