I made this hostel my base camp for three days. It has a good location. Gimmelwald is a great place to base any hiking/trekking perhaps climbing adventures you might want to take on when visiting the Jungfrau region. It's a quiet village, of quiet Swiss mountain folk. I loved it. If you are looking for action, try staying in Grindelwald or Interlaken..
The hostel was clean. The hangout/dining room was nice. The bathroom is shared, but clean and the showers are hot (and cost 1 franc). It has plenty of outside space for good weather views. The hostel has a restaurant attached, though i didn't eat at it. I enjoyed the beer on tap, however. This hostel is unique in Switzerland, as has a kitchen for hostel guest use, and i took advantage by making my own meals. I brought my own food and planned my meals accordingly as there isn't a market in town.. There is one in Lauterbrunnen though, right across from the train station.
The bunks are a tad close together at least in the mens bunk room.. Your neighboring bunkmate is only 2 inches away, though separated by a ten inch board... Expect a lot of English speakers here.. This is the "Top of Europe" after all.
I enjoyed my stay, and would come back. At this time, it ranks among my top five favorite hostels.
If I was planning a trip here, I'd spend at least three days hiking all day into the mountains. The trails are great, with good views from the top. You have to earn those views, however, as the trails are steep. Just the way I like 'em.
the location is very good, but equipment is not so good.
