TOKYO - help with itinary and rail travel

Me and a freind are going to India, Nepal and Sri Lanka in Sept - Nov and have no idea how we get from India over to S.L?? Do we get a boat,flight? Need to do the cheapest but any suggestions on who to go with?? Any suggestions?...Hong Kong for 4 days - must do's?
