Seminyak is a slightly more upmarket and quieter version of Kuta (to the south), where hostels and hotels do tend to cost a little more. However, it is a very quaint part of Bali where you can find anything you want. Be it a fancy restaurant or a roadside hawker, a warm beer with a live band or a sunset cocktail in an upper class bar.

I'd advise staying in Seminyak, it's got a great bar/nightlife scene but isn't packed like Kuta is... I stayed at Contiki Bali because the place was virtually empty when I visited (they had like 8 guests) and that was around the corner from some great bars like Sante Fe, anything around that area ...
