Napier, New Zealand
My friends and I had a great stay at the YHA in Napier. It was a basic, clean place to stay for 2 nights. There were three of us in a 4 bed share. They cleaned the bathrooms and kitchen daily, and had an assortment of kitchen supplies for our use. And a great outside patio with picnic tables. The location on the beach and near the main center of town couldn't be beat. I think the biggest drawback was the noise factor - the sound of guests opening and closing doors traveled well - but that was easily remedied with earplugs. The showers weren't the best but at least there was hot water. My friend who has stayed in many hostels before said this one was probably the nicest.
Nelson, New Zealand
Everything's just good at this very large and well-equipped YHA. Basic quality as you'd expect it, a nice terrace, very large kitchen and dining area, decent lounge. One gripe is that if you come with your own car, parking is a bit of an ordeal in Nelson. You can park overnight at the big parking area right next to the hostel, but then have to get up early to move the car to the other side of town.
