Hello all,

I was able to do the trip from Cartagena to Lima (by land) without any major problems. But it is a looooong ways and the roads in Colombia are pretty bad, the roads in Ecuador are good but steep and mountainous and the roads in Peru are good and bad with lot's of strips of construction where the road is gravel or dirt.

I have heard that the roads in Chile are as good as the roads in the USA. I highly doubt it just because I have seen nothing like that South of the US/Mexican border. Has anyone done this trip recently? How are the roads in 1.Southern Peru 2. Northern Chilean Border to Santiago? How long does it take? It's mostly desert all the way down, right?

Any good info here would be greatly appreciated. I am evaluating the trip and how long I need to allow for.

Thanks so much.

Not sure about Southern Peru specifically, but the roads in the north of Chile and down to Santiago are pretty smooth and perfect, with little traffic. They are some of the best roads in South America. Remember Chile is quite a rich country (compared to Peru and Bolivia in particular) due to all its mining and so the roads are not bad.
