Help needed please. I'm applying for my NZ bank account and it's asking me for an NZ address and an IRD number (so don't get taxed so high)

What do you do if you don't have an NZ address and how do I apply for an IRD Tax number I have search the net and still can't find where to apply.

Need to get this all sorted as I fly to NZ on 30th April

Thanks in advanced for any advise

As far as I know, you can only get an IRD number once you're in New Zealand (when you are, apply with this form, found through here).

Back when I did this, I also only set up my New Zealand bank account once I was in New Zealand - in which case you can give them your hostel's address to send your debitcard to, and tell them not to send you bank statements.

I also did both of those things once I got to NZ - it's far less hassle to do it once you get there and the procedure is quick, so there's no need to worry about it until you get to NZ.

Just confirming what Sander and Bex said! Set up my bank account from my hostel in Auckland, and depending where you are staying the hostel will help you to do it. It's all very straightforward and I don't remember going on a higher tax rate. By the time you get a job and get paid, you will have all the already organized.

Have a great time. NZ is fantastic! Wish I was going back :)

Hi all, thank you for the advise. I'll stop worrying and sort it out when I get there ? what forms of ID will I need to produce? Will passport and English driving lience be enough for the bank?

I'm very excited. It's going to hopefully be everything I have dreamed of. New life begins in 55 days.

Passport by itself should be enough. They're pretty used to dealing with backpackers wanting to open bank accounts. :)

Have a great time - I'm sure NZ will be everything you've dreamed of! Let me know if you need any other tips about NZ as I lived there for 5 years, originally on a working holiday visa.

Hi all. Me again. I have been thinking and wondered if you could advise me once again. In regards to transferring the funds from uk account to NZ account. Do I need to inform my bank that this will be happening or will it be simply to do it on online banking like a normal transfer?

Thanks in advance
